I N T R O D U C T I O N
Moribund is a realistic, semi-literate dog rpg that takes place in the fictional city of Los Hayden where every day of a dog’s life is like a test of it's survival. The city is no place for pets. The dangers of the city are a harsh reality, and unfortunate souls must struggle to find food, shelter, and protection. If starvation doesn't slowly suck the life out of you, you're still at risk of diseases carried by fleas and parasites, and even other dogs may endanger your life. You're lucky that most of the city streets are so congested that traffic never seems to move fast enough to do any damage if you happen to get hit by a car. Too bad this doesn't include the streets in the slums or the outer city limits, where stray dogs are most common. I guess you had better watch your step, mutt, or you wont last a minute.

Metropolitan Area - 1 Viewing The entire city of Los Hayden is either made up of skyscrapers, busy streets, and office buildings, or dirty, crime-infested slum areas. In the massive heart of Los Hayden you’ll find the metropolitan, an area that consists of several industrious urban districts. Some of these districts include the busy market area near Central Park, Main Street, China Town, and even the central business district, which is characterized by a concentration of retail and commercial buildings. Various neighborhoods are located within the metropolitan area. They consist primarily of luxury townhomes, which become more expensive the further you move into the metropolitan, and much cheaper the closer you are to the urban slums. While metropolitan Los Hayden may appear to be a leisurely location, its streets are still infested with homeless slobs, rats, and other feral animals that may pose a possible threat to the better people of Los Hayden.

Central Park Regardless of its name, Central Park is not exactly located in central Los Hayden. In fact, it lies somewhere between the central metropolitan area and the outer slums. Many would imply that the park procures the best of both worlds; the upper-class and lower-classes of Los Hayden. It is surely not the safest place, particularly during the midnight hours, but the park is often bustling with activity during the day. The park occupies almost 800 acres of the city. A carousel is located mid-park and is open daily between the Spring and Autumn, from 10:00am to 4:30pm. Located at the southeast corner of the park and enclosed by a natural wall of trees and shrubs, the pond provides solace from the city’s turmoil.

Urban Slums The slums are a large neighborhood on the peripheral of the city, just before you reach the outer city limits. Part of the slums stretches further into the city where old office buildings stand abandoned and decorated with unique graffiti designs that have been tagged by thugs and ruffians. The houses in the slums are shoddy and impaired, with creaking doors and overgrown lawns. Most of the chain link fences that confine the backyards of each of the houses are bent and broken, and some of the unoccupied houses windows are shattered. Poverty and gang violence are common characteristics in these slums, as well as illegal dog fighting. The streets are overrun with strays and runaways, and the majority of the neighborhood is infested with rats and insects.

Beneath the City
Subway Station The transit system, or more commonly referred to as the subway, is located beneath the city in a series of underground tunnels. These railway lines are separate from the underground tracks that were once used by freight trains. While the train passages have been vacant for several years, these subway tunnels are in active use. A vast majority of citizens in Los Hayden use the subway as a means of daily transportation to and from their work locations. There are various subway platforms stationed through out the city. Some are used more than others. Any abandoned or unused stations are usually occupied by homeless, though they more commonly choose the empty train tunnels beneath the city.

Sewer System The sewer is a system of underground pipes and tunnels that transport industrial wastewater from the city to the sewage treatment facility just beyond the Jensen River. Vertical pipes, or otherwise known as manholes, connect the main pipes and tunnels to the surface of the city. The sewers are generally powered by gravity, though there are pumps stationed here and there to help the flow of sewage if necessary. Larger “outfall” pipes allow wastewater to pour into parts of the river when the sewers become flooded by water entering the city’s storm drains, such as during wet weather. These pipes do not overflow unless there is an excessive downpour of rain, so they are commonly used as a temporary residence for the homeless and even stray animals. The sewer tunnels are home to rats and other rodents.

Railroad Tunnels Empty railroad tunnels run beneath the periphery of the city and are connected to the abandoned train station just outside of the city. The tunnels branch out into several passages and eventually join together at several smaller stations on the opposite side of Los Hayden. With exception of the homeless, these tunnels have been vacant for hundreds of years. The passages are dark and infested with rats, making this an ideal hunting ground for feral cats. Despite the brimming population of felines, stray mutts are often spotted roaming here, as well.

Outer City Limits
Jensen River The Jensen River separates urban Los Hayden from suburban Los Hayden. A bridge, commonly known as the Harrington Bridge, allows safe passage from one side of the river to the other. The bridge was constructed by an architect who favored the designs of John Roebling, Washington Roebling, and Emily Warren Roebling, the designers of the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City; therefore the Harrington Bridge has a rather similar appearance, though slightly smaller and much shorter in length. The Jensen River is not safe for swimmers, as the channel is swift and can be rather dangerous if one were to fall in. There have been several reports of lives lost within the river, particularly due to the population of homeless that often seek shelter beneath the Harrington Bridge and in tunnels that lead into the river. While the urban slums may be located on the far side of the city, there are still rather poor looking homes across the river. The neighborhood is not very large, and consists mainly of office buildings. Further down the river, there is an old shipyard that appears to be vacant, but is still in active use. There are, however, quite a few shipyard buildings that are either used only for storage, or not used at all.

Los Hayden Impound Lot Across from the Jensen River, there is a wasteland of scrap metal; a junkyard of wrecked and repossessed cars and trucks. Various rusted body parts lie stacked and scattered amongst the mountains of crippled vehicles. Weeds and grasses tear through crevices in the lot, and pervade the corroded mechanisms that settle upon the dirt and fractured concrete. The impound lot was once used often to conveniently store vehicles that owners could no longer afford. Citizens were given a chance to recover their automobiles, if only they could bring up their payments. However, as you can see, not very many people could really afford to keep their cars. The vehicles became dirty and eroded, and pretty soon they weren’t even good enough to be sold to dealers, so they were left here to further rot. The impound lot quickly turned into a junkyard, as people went from donating unwanted automobile parts, to dumping their trash and unwanted belongings. In turn, the junkyard has become a local “hotspot” for the homeless, who spend hours here digging through heaps of carburators, tailpipes, and trash bags full of wastes. The lot has also attracted the likes of several types of animals, who instinctively seek shelter here.

Vacant Warehouse A short distance from the impound lot there is an old, rusty warehouse. There’s no telling what used to be stored or manufactured here, it’s been vacant for several years. Weeds and grasses penetrate the cracks and splits of the concrete floor, and there’s not a window left intact. Shattered glass still remains on the dusty ground, next to rusted nails and splintered boards that once protected the windows. Concrete blocks make up the walls of the warehouse, now tagged with graffiti and little quotes left behind by some anonymous teenager. Field mice often seek shelter here, making the warehouse a routine hunting ground for feral cats, birds of prey, snakes, and other local predators.

Suburban Neighborhood The suburbs are located right outside of the city, a short distance from the Jensen River. Row upon row of well maintained lawn stretches as far as the eye can see. Each yard is trimmed and managed on a regular basis. Strays are not welcome here. God forbid they dig up the neighbor’s flowerbed, or leave a small gift behind on the lawn. Regardless of the disapproval of suburban tenants, stray dogs still commonly roam the streets. Reports of feral animals attract Humane Society vans, which occasionally patrol the area in hopes of rescuing and relocating the animals.

Hillcrest Cemetery Located just outside of the exurbs, Hillcrest Cemetery is one of the nation’s oldest rural, garden cemeteries. Over 3,000 trees and 165 species of native plants grace the 200 verdant acres of rolling hills. Many of the ancient trees are more than a century old, still broad and lush. A low, mossy lawn shrouds the earth. The landscape is maintained regularly by an elderly gentleman and his son. During the temperate seasons, the cemetery is often obscured in a warm, dense vapor. The wooded graveyard is peaceful and provides for excellent shade and shelter, as it is a very secluded and undisturbed area just outside of Los Hayden.

Los Hayden Exurbs Several miles beyond the suburbs lie the Los Hayden exurbs, an area rural in character but arguably still within the outer limits of the city. These provincial exurbs are particularly inhabited by wealthy families. Newly developed homes are primarily built on rather extensive portions of land, making this an ideal housing location for livestock owners and modern agricultural farmers. These exurbs, being a rather large, sparsely populated region, are an ideal location for feral animals. The diverse environment provides substantial shelter and a supply of prey is usually abundant all year round. It's not very often that urban strays wander this far from the city limits, however, this rural area is not suitable for the living conditions of metropolitan mutts.
